Community groups are leading opposition to save this historic Sydney site from flagrant overdevelopment.
Sydney Harbour was once a vibrant working harbour with a rich maritime and industrial history. In recent times the NSW Labor Government has systematically dismantled what was once known as the Hungry Mile, where so much of the history ofthe union movement began (particularly the Waterside Workers' Federation's bitter industrial campaigns to protect workers' safety, pay and working conditions).
Recently renamed Barangaroo, this 22-hectare site was once the old Patrick wharf site on the eastern side of Darling Harbour. The site runs from King St Wharf, along the eastern side of Darling Harbour to Millers Point and around to Walsh Bay. The northern end adjoins Millers Point and the Rocks.
Today it is one of the most significant and controversial redevelopments on Sydney Harbour. Jack Mundey, who led the green bans in the 1970s to save the Rocks, is now leading community...
