It takes prescience and courage in the first decade of this new century to author and publish a new textbook dealing with system safety. MIL-STD-882D, a document long recognized as a cornerstone governing much of system safety practice, has been undergoing revision for a very long while. Formal release of this standard is anticipated soon. Its as-yet-unknown changes from earlier editions threaten instant obsolescence for any new book that dares to depart from the standard's eventual requirements.
Ericson has managed to avoid such an outcome with this fine new text. Although he mentions the EXDD standard from time to time, he otherwise adheres closely to unassailable principles of practicing risk management and applying analytical tools of system safety: identifying hazards,...
