USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea (NNS) -- The Perform to Serve (PTS) program was integrated into the Fleet Rating Identification Engine (RIDE) Oct. 1, aimed to better achieve the goal of putting the right Sailor in the right job.
This change offers USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Sailors more options for controlling their careers.
"The Fleet RIDE program helps Sailors identify the jobs and programs they are qualified for in the Navy," said Navy Counselor 1st Class (SW/AW) Sara M. Reynolds, USS Enterprise command career counselor. "It also shows what is available through PTS in case they wanted to convert to another rating."
PTS was launched in 2003 as a way for the Navy to shape manning to match mission requirements. It initially applied only to "first-term" Sailors in overmanned ratings in pay grades E-3 to E-6, with six to 10 years of service.
The Navy has expanded PTS to Sailors E-3 through E-6 with 10 to 14 years of service. Sailors in pay grades E-1 and E-2 cannot apply to reenlist.
Sailors should consult their career counselors 15 months before their end of active obligated service to complete the appropriate paperwork. A PTS application must be submitted no matter what a Sailor's reenlistment intentions are.
"Sailors must start the process early. The program currently reviews up to the last five evaluations, Physical Readiness Information Management System data, and advancement and security information," said Reynolds.
Sailors who are not competitive amongst their peers risk being denied by PTS. While most Sailors are permitted to reenlist in their current rating, Sailors in overmanned ratings may be offered reenlistment in one that is undermanned. Performance is a critical factor in PTS selection.
Additional options are available to qualified Sailors who are not eligible for the PTS process. Continued military service is available through the Selected Reserve or in the Army, via the Blue to Green program that allows Sailors to transition their military service from the Navy to the Army.
Other support services and benefits are available through the Navy's job transition assistance program (TAP) and the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
Enterprise Strike Group consists of Enterprise, the guided-missile destroyers USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), USS Barry (DDG 52) and USS Mason (DDG 87), the guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 56), USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8), Carrier Air Wing 1 and Destroyer Squadron 2.
Enterprise Strike Group is conducting COMPTUEX as part of its work-ups in preparation for an upcoming deployment.
