On January 9, 1930 Arthur Waugh wrote in his diary: "Unpleasing article by Evelyn Gardner in The Evening Standard." The article in question is headlined, in true journalese style: "THE MODERN MOTHERA Young Wife's CHALLENGING PLEA" and subheaded "Last Generation Blamed for their Children's Failures and Suffering." An additional caption in much smaller type proclaims: "Will the younger generation make better mothers than the last? The Hon. Evelyn Gardner (MRS. EVELYN WAUGH, wife of the young novelist) expersses, in her provocative article, the emphatic belief that they will. Tomorrow MISS MARJORIE BOWEN, the well-known author and herself a 'modern mother,' will challenge this view in an equally appealing article. Mrs. Waugh is the daughter of Lady Burghclere, and is twenty-six." The article runs over a thousand words and take half of page 7 of the Jan. 9 issue.
