In light of the significance of the right to education, this article reflects on its status as a fundamental right that can assist in the transformation and improvement of societies. To this end, the remainder of this article is divided into four parts. The first part, which is broken into two short sections, begins by placing the right to education in the context of compulsory attendance laws generally, the milieu within which the fundamental human right of schooling exists before briefly addressing the nature of student rights. The second section reviews the key elements of leading international covenants acknowledging education as a fundamental human right. The third part of the article reflects on why these internationally accepted agreements are important for all educational leaders. The final portion of the article offers recommendations as to how leaders can meet the educational goals enunciated in the international covenants in order to help build a better tomorrow for all.

Cet article examine le droit à l'éducation, à la lumière de son importance en tant que droit fondamental, qui peut contribuer à la transformation et à l'amélioration de la société. À cette fin, cet article est divisé en quatre parties. La première, divisée en deux courtes sections, met le droit à l'éducation en contexte, en présentant de façon générale la législation visant la fréquentation scolaire obligatoire et le cadre dans lequel ce droit fondamental existe, avant d'explorer brièvement la nature des droits des étudiants. La deuxième partie expose les éléments clés des conventions internationales qui reconnaissent le droit à l'éducation comme étant un droit humain fondamental. La troisième partie de cet article présente les raisons pour lesquelles ces conventions internationales sont importantes pour tous les dirigeants du domaine de l'éducation. La dernière partie de cet article contient des recommandations aux dirigeants du domaine de l'éducation pour l'atteinte des buts éducatifs énoncés dans les conventions internationales, afin d'assurer à tous un avenir meilleur.
