Carl Neil admits he was somewhat adrift in 1955 after earning a bachelor's degree in American Studies from Yale University, where he graduated magna cum laude on a full scholarship.
"As a truck driver's son and a graduate of Boise High School, I didn't have a very good idea of what one could do with a college education," he said. "The law seemed like an interesting profession."
He earned another full scholarship to attend Columbia Law School, and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class in 1958. He moved to Oregon that year, began clerking for Oregon Supreme Court Justice Hall Lusk, and then joined the...
