Fallingwater celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. And the public will be receiving the gifts.
Over the next five months, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, which operates Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic modernist house, will offer a symposium, the release of a new book, a pair of exhibits and a gala as part of the celebration.
It's not accidental that many of the events have a strong educational component.
"We've been building education (opportunities) since 1988," says Lynda Waggoner, the director of Fallingwater and vice president of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. "We see it as taking Fallingwater to the next level by sharing the lessons that can be learned at the site."
Events begin Tuesday with "Private Domains/Public Displays: The Modern House Interpreted," a symposium at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Oakland in celebration of Fallingwater's 75th anniversary.
The symposium, which is open to the public, brings together curators and directors from Fallingwater and other significant modernist house museums for an all-day discussion on the challenges of interpreting and preserving these radically inventive structures.
