Abstract

This study seeks to reunite the modern rosary with its roots in the Divine Feminine. To show the connection between the goddess and prayer beads I discuss the predecessor to the Catholic rosary, the Eastern mala, the symbolism of the mala and the Catholic rosary, and the connection between the Virgin Mary and earlier goddesses.

This project was sparked by the phrase “goddess rosaries.” Using a research method that combines heuristics and organic inquiry, I recount my experience and that of two other women who are actively engaged with goddess rosaries. To honor the tacit knowledge gained through this process, I will offer a ritual to the public that includes a walking rosary showcasing my original art and prayers with an opportunity for participants to make goddess rosaries of their own. Since the ritual will take place after the thesis has been completed, a detailed description of the plan for this ritual is included here.
