Alternative medicine has had a controversial history and uneasy relationship with the mainstream medical profession. In recent years alternative treatments have become more accepted practice and this encyclopedia is a good example of the increased acceptance and the range of treatments available.
Split over four volumes The Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine third edition is attractive and strongly bound. It bears more resemblance to medical reference works than to the more "kooky" works often associated with alternative medicine. Although not overly imbued with diagrams or photographs, those that are included are appropriate and make it informative, interesting and pleasant to use.
