A pre-Revolutionary War conflict in what is now Alamance County has been much debated among historians.
Carole Troxler, professor emerita of history at Elon University, has a new contribution to the discussion in the form of a book titled "Farming Dissenters: The Regulator Movement in Piedmont North Carolina."
Conflict between the Regulators, who were settlers in this part of the state, and the colonial government culminated in 1771 in the Battle of Alamance between the Regulators and Royal Governor William Tryon's forces.
The clash involved issues such as taxation, land ownership, local control and government corruption, with the battle ending the rebellion.
The book is published by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. Troxler said she's pleased the price of $15 makes it affordable.
