Suleman Essop Dangor, A Critical Biography of Shaykh Yusuf published by the Centre for Research in Islamic Studies, Durban -Westvil Ie, 1982, pp. ix, 80 including six maps. No price is mentioned.
The book is typewritten and printed in offset A4 format. It is provided with a foreword by Professor S Salman Nadvi , director of the Centre. It contains a bibliography but there is no index. It is a pity that the six pages of photographs mentioned on p. i and still contained in the list of contents on p. iv were not included. A loose insert explains that the colour photographs could not be reproduced by the press.
It was originally submitted by Mr Dangor as a Master's thesis at the University of Durban-Westville in 1981.
Sheikh Yûsuf was born in 1626 at Goa East Indies. His mother was related to the kings of Goa and he himself married into the Royal House of Bantam. At the age of eighteen he studied the traditional Islamic sciences in Mecca. After an unspecified period of time, presumably about ten years later, Yûsuf returned to the East Indies and established himself as religious teacher in the court of Sultan Ageng (ruled 16511683) of 8antam. Later he became chief of the Khalwatiya Sufi Order.
