Abstract

The study presented in this article aims to identify the factors that contribute to the creation of innovative business capacity and to value how this capacity influences the business performance. A conceptual model is proposed with five dimensions: firm, entrepreneur, environment innovative capacity of the firm, and performance. The study was based on a sample of manufacturing firms of Beira Interior (Portugal). The empirical data used in this research is drawn from dataset collected using a structured mail questionnaire. The data were submitted to statistic analysis through multiple linear regressions. The obtained results allowed concluding that the factors that influence the innovative capacity of the firms are: entrepreneurial spirit of the entrepreneur, life-cycle of the firm, existence of partnerships, age of the firm and dimension of the firm. It is ended, also, that a bigger innovative capacity of the firms creates competitive advantages, which contribute to obtaining a better performance.
