The new Edition hospitality brand is a joint venture by Marriott International and entrepreneur-turned-hotelier Ian Schräger, and by the look of this, the first hotel of several planned, they make the perfect bedfellows.
Location wise The Waikiki Edition couldn't fail. The hotel occupies a glorious spot overlooking the Pacific Ocean and with white walls and whitewashed floors throughout, it gives out an appropriately beach-fresh vibe.
One of the first things you notice when you enter the 353-room hotel is a stunning installation by local artist and former professional surfer, Herbie Fletcher. It has been created using broken surfboards donated by some of biggest names in the sport, including Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Nathan Fletcher and Bruce Irons.
This sits above the bespoke reception desk, sculpted in plywood and finished using techniques and traditions more commonly applied to Hawaiian surfboard making.
A large rotating bookcase featuring locally crafted art and more eclectic objects and memorabilia besides doubles up as a dividing wall behind which lies the Eobby Bar, filled with oversized sofas and clusters of custom-designed furniture in exotic woods, bronze, leather, linen and silk.
An impressive concrete staircase rises up from the lobby, leading to the heart of the hotel, accommodating such luxuries as an outdoor cinema, swimming pools, a private inland beach and tropical gardens, arranged by acclaimed landscape designer Deborah Nevins.
Her Sunset Beach was created with more than 100 tonnes of imported sand from neighbouring Hawaiian islands while an infinity-edge lagoon shimmers with its lining of bespoke Yves Klein blue glass tiles. Brightly coloured Brazilian hammocks, oversized pillows encased in vibrant African batik prints, and lounge chairs set in the water add to the relaxed island ambience.
The hotel's 353 guest rooms are equally magnificent, decorated in natural tones and rich woods with huge windows looking out over the pool to the city, harbour and ocean beyond. En suite bathrooms include oversized, glass-surround showers, and sinks and counter tops in Terrazzo
