It is inherent in the nature of medical textbooks to become outdated rather quickly. Indeed, some matter in most such books is passé before it appears in print.
Blaustein's Pathology of the Female Genital Tract had generally been regarded as the "gold standard" in gynecologic pathology ever since it first appeared some 35 years ago; however, its last edition had appeared in 2001. Since then, there had been enormous developments, particularly in the realm of molecular matters. Furthermore, several worthy competing textbooks, including those by Robboy et al and Crum-Nucci-Lee, had appeared in the interim. An updated version of Blaustein's was long overdue.
