Abstract

This thesis examines some of the personalities and institutions that were involved in the evolution of the four-field approach in anthropology through various historical periods into what it is today. With changing views and budget cuts, it is possible that the four-field approach in the United States will break apart. If this were to happen it could change the face of anthropology as we know it. Anthropology and the four-field approach has been evolving for over one-hundred years, and although it has at times come under attack by scholars in other fields, the four-field approach is the reason for our understanding of past civilizations, as well as understanding the similarities and differences of living societies. To allow the four-field approach to be split into several separate departments would be detrimental to the continuing study of human beings, past and present.
