Don't talk to Chief Redblood Anthony Morales about casinos.
Morales, of the Gabrielino-Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians, recently was involved in a court case over membership issues of his tribe. He feared some only wanted to become members in order to build a casino in Los Angeles County.
And in order to build a casino, a tribe needs to get federal recognition. But Morales says he wants the Gabrielinos to have federal recognition, but for reasons that have nothing to do with gaming.
Federal recognition would provide housing, education, health and land benefits, and would also help them preserve sacred burial sites dug up by development projects, Morales said.
