TG: Why a festival on Filipino American jazz?
CZ: Virtually all the current Pinoy jazz artists in the Bay Area owe Flip Nuñez and Rudy Tenio a great debt for being the Filipino pioneers of this genre. Because of our long association with African American culture, we play their music very convincingly-with a lot of passion and "soul" that most people identify with this music. Our take on Latin musicBobby Enriquez is also a very powerful example and deserves more credit. Los Angeles-based singer Charmaine Clamor is promoting "Jazzipino" as a new genre. Up here (in San Francisco) we're calling it simply Pinoy Jazz. It's our time!
