To me, Incubus has always seemed to epitomize the "alternative rock" genre: The band's music is catchy and sometimes I can appreciate its songs, but there doesn't seem to be anything especially captivating about its sound to make it rise above its lukewarm songwriting and musicianship.
Stylistically, Incubus is best defined as nice-guy rap-metal. But to do the band justice, that label gives an unreasonably restrictive impression of their music. Incubus at least attempts to incorporate different influences, and although it doesn't always work out, at least you can appreciate something different. Good intentions aside, the band has some fatal flaws, most notably the inclusion of a DJ into the music, a definite mistake for any but the most experimental rock groups.
Incubus is currently on tour promoting its newest album, "Morning View," and Sunday night the group played a concert at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall.
