NEW MEXICO- The Sheraton-Old Town Hotel was the site of the Sixth National Indian Media Conference hosted by the Native American Public Broadcasting Consortium and the American Indian Film Institute.
Indian people from throughout the United States and Canada gathered here last week to discuss various issues involving print journalism, television, and radio. Over 150 people registered to attend the various workshops and events on June 7-9.
The highlight of the confab included selection of "Indian Media Persons of the Year," in the areas of print, television, and radio.
Tim Giago, editor of The Lakota Times, an independent weekly newspaper out of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, was named the "Indian Media Person of the Year in Print Journalism." Giago owns and operates the publication which has a circulation of about 2,000 and serves the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Peggy Berryhill was voted the, "Indian Media Person of the Year in Radio." Ms. Berryhill is the producer of a radio station in Berkeley, California. Conroy Chino, an investigative news reporter for KOAT-TV, channel 7, an ABC affiliate...
