JAYA Jusco Bhd posted a 20 per cent growth in sales for the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2001 compared with that of the previous corresponding period, bucking the industry trend that saw the department store-cum- supermarket category contract by 3 per cent in the same period.
Managing director Soichi Okazaki said the impressive growth figure was recorded on a same store basis and attributable to the Jusco Fest held in October and the Mega Sales Carnival held in December.
Soichi was talking to reporters at a press conference to announce the appointment of songstress Siti Nurhaliza Taruddin as Jusco's spokesperson for "With All Our Hearts" charity fund.
According to the Malaysian Retailers Association (MRA), in 2001, the department store-cum-supermarket category contracted by 2 per cent. Jusco is a member of MRA.
