The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor this week unanimously elected its political director, Rusty Hicks, to succeed Maria Elena Durazo as executive secretary-treasurer of the giant labor organization.
A veteran of the Afghanistan war, Hicks is, at 34, the youngest to serve in the post, which oversees the labor activities of more than 300 unions. Its county membership runs around 600,000.
Durazo announced she will be stepping down in January to take a post with the national Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union and focus on immigration issues.
Hicks did not grow up in the labor...
