An incident occurred recently in North Portland. It took place at the University of Portland's Chiles Center. Not to worry, this wasn't a mugging, shooting, or any other negative happening. It was actually a positive, high energy concert put on by The String Cheese Incident (SCI). What differentiates this Colorado jam band from every other group in the country is their mandolin/violin playing member, Michael Kang. Yes, that's right, at the forefront of one of the most exciting acts in music today is an Asian musician.
Like many Korean parents, the Kangs started their son on music lessons at an early age. Violin was the instrument of choice for the seven-year-old immigrant to Northern California. While mother and father "did push every once and a while, they weren't dead set on me becoming a musician," recalls Michael.
