Actor and director Andy Garcia earned praise in two fields Monday as his documentary "Cachao - Con Su Ritmo No Hay Dos," about the legendary Cuban percussionist and is starring role in "When a Man Loves a Woman" were nominated for the fifth annual Desi Entertainment Awards, honoring Latino excellence in the media.
Competing against Garcia's "Cuchao" in the Favorite Film category are fiction films "Mi Vida Loca," "I Like It Like That" and Paul Rodriguez's "A Million to Juan."
In the Favorite Film Actor category, Garcia is joined by the late Raul Julia for "Street Fighter," Emilio Estevez for "D2 - The Mighty Ducks," brother Charlie Sheen for "Major League II" and Jon Seda for "I Like It Like That."
"I Like It Like That" co-star Lauren Velez drew a Favorite Film Actress nod along with Rosie Perez for her role in "It Could Happen to You." Also receiving nominations were Cameron Diaz for "The Mask," Trini Alvarado for "Little Women" and Madelyn Stowe for "Blink."
Favorite TV Actor nominees included "New York Undercover's" Michael DeLorenzo, Hector Elizondo from "Chicago Hope," Lorenzo Lamas of "Renegade," Alfonso Ribeiro from "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and "NYPD Blue" newcomer Jimmy Smits.
Nominated for Favorite TV Actress were "General Hospital's" Lily Melgar, Rita Moreno of "The Cosby Mysteries," Theresa Saldana of "The Commish," Liz Torres from "The John Larroquette Show" and "Melrose Place's" Daphne Zuniga.
