Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Amnon Lipkin-Shahak will this week lobby Turkey to produce the Merkava III as a replacement for its aging M-60 tanks.
Shahak leaves late tonight for a two-day working visit to Turkey as part of a bilateral military agreement. A key topic on the agenda will be controversial Israel-Turkish-US joint naval maneuvers scheduled for January. The maneuvers, which have come under criticism from most Arab nations, have already been postponed twice.
