CHRISTINA AGUILERA 'Christina Aguilera' (RCA): She may be dubbed the new Britney Spears but her debut album reveals that the 18-year- old is entrenched firmly in Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston territory. On show is sensual, soul-tinged R'n'B that bristles with quality thanks to production by the likes of Guy Roche and Travon Potts and songwriting credits for Diane Warren. Christina's powerful voice easily covers the required range and marks her as 'one to watch' in the future.

SIMON COLLINS "All Of Who You Are' (WEA): Stepping out from the shadow of a superstar dad can be tough, but the son of Phil Collins announces his existence with a debut album which, while short on identity, offers a plethora of pop stylings which augur well for his future. From rocker 'Coast' to patriotic 'Pride' with the old man on backing vocals, there's promise here.
LUKAN 'Head To Sound' (Depth): Bigger than an EP but smaller than a regular album, the Nottingham band's six tracker is a heads-down rockfest which arrives like manna from heaven for the blues/ heavy metal starved fans who despaired of ever again hearing early Deep Purple/ Bad Company-style rock 'n' roll. What a shame it is only six tracks, let's hope the next effort is a full lengther.
MELANIE C 'Northern Star' (Virgin): She's usually cited as the best singer in the Spice Girls but over an album's worth of material her raw, rather harsh, voice begins to grate and her lack of range is revealed for all to see. That's not to say there are not some good things. 'Goin' Down' and 'Ga Ga' remain great rock songs while the Beatley 'Suddenly Monday' is fun.
