Auckland writer Graeme Lay edited 100 NZ Short Short Stories, reviewed on this page: "At the moment I'm re-reading several books about New Zealand's history. The first two are Jamie Belich's I Shall Not Die, and Maurice Shadbolt's Monday's Warriors. They're basically the same story, one fact and one fiction. It's clear that Maurice Shadbolt used Jamie Belich's research to base his fiction on, but they have quite different treatments because one author is an historian and the other is a novelist. It's fascinating to re-read them at the same time. I'm also re-reading Jamie Belich's Making Peoples, which is a really comprehensive look at our history, it goes back about 1000 years and comes through to the end of the 19th century. All three are making me appreciate once again the drama and richness of our human history."
