Full text preview

Babson Capital Management LLC is creating an eight-member team to source mezzanine debt and private equity investment opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Babson said its team, including four people based in Sydney and four in Asia and the U.S., will focus on investments in mezzanine debt and equity securities of middle-market companies located primarily in Australia and New Zealand, as well as select developed countries in Asia, including Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.

Managing Director Michael Hermsen, who co-heads Babson's mezzanine and private equity group and will oversee the firm's Asia Pacific team, said the team has deep experience in mezzanine and private equity investing and established relationships with private equity sponsors needed to generate significant deal flow.

Among the additions to the team in Sydney are Shane Forster and Adam Wheeler, who join the firm as managing directors and will share portfolio management and investment sourcing responsibilities. They are joined in Sydney by Elliott Wong, a director, and Adrian Ng, an associate director.

Working with the Sydney team are Benjamin Silver, a managing director in Los Angeles, as well as Adam Nowak and Howe Wu, both based in Asia.

Babson's mezzanine and private equity group was formed in 1992. It currently has a staff of 21, with $5 billion in mezzanine and private equity investments under management.

Babson also said it has received an Australian Financial Securities License, which allows the firm to manage a broad range of investments in Australia.

The firm has been investing with private equity firms in the Asia-Pacific region since 2005.
