Understanding Plastic Surgery: Tummy tuck and liposuction are common procedures performed on the abdomen

Plastic surgery is no longer limited to the wealthy; people from all ethnic groups are discovering its benefits, and while most people seeking cosmetic surgery are women, an ever-increasing number of men now consult plastic surgeons.

One reason for the increase in popularity of aesthetic surgery is the decrease in associated stigma. Many well-known movie stars, models, musicians and other celebrities proudly display the results of their plastic surgery procedures.

Plastic surgery is also more affordable than in the past. While most procedures are not covered by insurance -- breast reduction is one of the few procedures reimbursed -- many procedures are now performed safely in an office or an ambulatory surgery center at a fraction of the hospital cost. Most plastic surgeons require full payment before surgery, but do not offer "payment plans." There are cosmetic surgery finance companies for those who qualify, but the interest rates are usually about 20 percent.

The most common plastic surgery of the face are rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, facelift, and torn earlobe repair.

A rhinoplasty is performed to reshape the nose and is tailored to a person's facial features. A large nasal bridge is reduced, a wide bridge is narrowed, and a flat bridge is augmented. A bulbous tip is refined, a flat tip is raised and wide nostrils are narrowed. A chin implant may also be placed in order to bring harmony to the face.

Eyelid surgery is performed to remove excess lax skin and fat, giving the eyes a more youthful and refreshed appearance. The scars are well concealed in the natural eyelid creases.
