Abstract

This paper attempts to identify the leadership qualities of drummer and band leader Art Blakey that enabled him to maintain a successful ensemble for over thirty-five years. Included is an in depth look into the influence of Blakey throughout his own career and highlights the significant influence he had on future generations. In addition, this paper explores the successful careers of several distinguished alumni from Blakey's ensemble, the Jazz Messengers.
