Launched as a weekly magazine in 1923 to help shape the image of the BBC, the Radio Times soon became one of the most spectacular successes of inter-war journalism reaching a circulation of over 800,000 within two years.

While many people turned to the Radio Times for programme information, from the start a large part of the magazine was devoted to profiles, interviews and articles by producers, directors and performers together with readers' letters considered by the BBC to be vital feedback from the `unseen audience'.

Publication of the Radio Times on microform makes back issues from 1923 readily available in an accessible, space-saving form. Libraries subscribing to current issues can benefit from regularly replacing their full size unbound copies with the microform edition.
