Overview

The herbarium of Nicholas S. Parmantier, consisting of plants of the Paris region, was deposited at one of the earliest meetings of the Academy in 1812.

With the deposits in 1898 of the surviving botanical collection of the American Philosophical Society, the Academy herbarium extended its domain back to 1780 and even earlier, to the beginnings of the botanical discoveries of Henry Muhlenberg, Benjamin Smith Barton and Andre ´ Michaux.

The earliest plant collections in the Western Hemisphere are now at the Academy. The microfiche collection includes some 23,500 types and authenticating specimens.
