The Eastern Theater includes the battles and campaigns of various Union armies, particularly the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Shenandoah. Union armies operated in the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Florida. Part 1 also highlights operations by the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, including its various corps. Part 1 charts General George B. McClellan's Peninsular Campaign in detail while also focusing on General Stonewall Jackson's opposing Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Battle histories of Second Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg; Chancellorsville and Gettysburg; and Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Appomattox are all featured. There are even histories on the interesting but little known invasion of St. Albans, Vermont, by Confederate raiders and Canadian sympathizers. Conceived with the hope of bringing war to the North and thereby shifting Union forces out of Richmond, this raid amounted to little more than a military demonstration.
