Published cooperatively with Maruzen Co., Ltd., of Tokyo, these documents shed new light on the transformation of Japan from enemy to ally. Among the many themes traced in the documents are the surrender, demilitarization, repatriation, reparations, inter-ally relations, economic recovery, the Korean War, and peace treaty negotiations. The collection includes relevant documents from individual participants as well as official bodies. Selections were made from the papers of Harry S. Truman, Henry L. Stimson, Dean Acheson, and James V. Forrestal, along with oral histories from other leaders and memos from George Kennan. The State-War-Navy Coordinating Committee and its successor, the National Security Council, are represented by minutes and other documents. Activities of the international Far Eastern Commission and its Allied Council for Japan are fully covered, as are reports from State Department staff.
