General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, Prussian army officer and general in the American Revolution, was born in Magdeburg in 1730. He served in the Seven Years War and later became an aide to Frederick the Great and court chamberlain for the Prince of Hohenzollern-Hechingen.

In Paris in 1777 Steuben met Benjamin Franklin, who gave him letters of introduction to George Washington. Steuben arrived in America in 1778, served with Washington in Valley Forge, and by the end of the war had become one of the American Revolution‘s most celebrated military heroes.

Nearly 4000 documents from more than one hundred private and institutional sources in Europe, Latin America and the US have been assembled for this microfilm edition of Steuben‘s Papers, edited by Edith von Zemenszky.
