Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine what individuals who have excelled in their professions reported regarding their AD/HD and their leadership practices. The Ancona, Malone, Orlikowski and Senge (2006) Four Capabilities Frame (FCF) was used as the guiding framework, that comprises the capabilities of sensemaking, relating, visioning and inventing.

One early theory was that leaders with AD/HD could potentially be better at environmental scanning than their rational or linear thinking peers, however to this investigator's knowledge, no researcher has explored the link between AD/HD and leadership practices to test this theory. AD/HD has historically been seen as a disabling condition. By interviewing leaders using the FCF framework, the investigator examined the leadership practices of those with AD/HD in light of the four leadership capabilities.

Six individuals with AD/HD who have excelled in their professions located in the northeastern and southeastern regions of the United States participated in a face-to-face or phone interview using protocol including open-ended questions drawn from the MIT Four Capabilities Framework for leadership including sensemaking, relating, visioning and inventing (Ancona, et al. 2006).
