Abstract
While hospice services have been available to families for over three decades, currently only 5% of the patients who receive hospice services are Latino. Such underutilization is often a result of the lack of cultural competency among service providers. The purpose of this project was to develop a community-based outreach program through Bella Vida Hospice to increase awareness and provide education to Latino families about the benefits of hospice services available in their community. A community outreach worker or promotora will provide education to Latino families through family meetings or community-based presentations. The Weingart Foundation was selected as the potential funder for this innovative program and a grant proposal was prepared which will augment the outreach efforts of Bella Vida Hospice. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.
