Abstract
This research aims to analyze the causes of dropout among the freshman students of the Executive Secretariat Course in two public universities in Paran State, in the period between 2009 and 2012.The study is a survey and the methodology used considered the data collected by the application of a questionnaire involving a sample of the dropout students of the Executive Secretariat Course in both Universities. The results found, through a quantitative analysis and dialogue with the theoretical framework researched on the topic, listed the main factors that have led students to abandon the Course. The causes of dropout can be external to the institution, linked to the individual characteristics of the dropout students as study skills, incompatibility of schedules and disenchantment with the course, early choice of profession and the discovery of new interests, and it can also be internal related to the structure of the course and/or of the University, as the lack of professors, inappropriate criteria of evaluation, lack of supporting structure, lack of clarity of educational project of the course and the lack of institutional programs for the student. It is not within the reach of those involved with the Executive Secretariat Course to interfere with the external causes of dropout related to the student's personality, but it is their duty to do something about internal institutional deficits mentioned by the dropout students.
