Abstract

Problem solving and problem posing are regarded as important components and objectives of the mathematics course. In this regard, problem solving process, which was defined by Polya and which is composed of four steps, and problem posing skills have been examined, and analytical evaluation of these skills have been performed in this study. The sample of the study is composed of 69 eighth grade students. Case study method, which is based on qualitative approach, has been used in the study. Six open-ended problems have been used in collecting the data. Descriptive analysis has been utilized in analysing the data. When the obtained findings have been taken into account, it has been observed that the students generally did not succeed in the three steps set forth by Polya in problem solving process (understanding the problem, devising a plan for the solution and evaluation) and problem posing step, but nonetheless, they did not have any problem in carrying out the plan after correctly determining the plan regarding the problem.
