Introduction
Some of the emerging research areas in contemporary cell biology are studies on single live cells using microscopy, cell culture on three-dimensional (3D) scaffolds, and studies of response of a cell to chemical and mechanical stimulants such as drugs, fluid shear, etc. All these studies require specialized systems to serve the diverse needs such as cells grown on cover-slips for high-magnification imaging, flow chambers for effecting fluid flow, etc. Most of these requirements are not catered to by conventional cell culture systems, notably Petri dishes and multiwell plates.
