Objective: To obtain the prevelance of syphilis among the patients that attend tertiary referral center in Turkey and discuss antenatal syphilis screenin in the light of this information.
Material and Methods: A retrospective cohort study based on patient datas obtained from tertiary referral center in Turkey. Serological syphilis screening was performed on all pregnant women as a part of routine antenatal care at their first hospital visit during pregnancy using the VDRL. TPHA was used to confirm positive screening results for syphilis for the diagnosis of patients with positive results
Results: The mean age was 27.4 years. The Incidence of positive syphilis serology was found to be 0.013% (1 patient), and one confirmatory tests were positive (0.013%).TPHA-positive pregnant woman diagnosed with syphilis was treated with benzathine penicillin and gave birth to normal babies without any signs of congenital syphilis
Conclusion: Syphilis prevelance should be determined in each developing countries with population based studies. And according to their syphilis prevelance; each country should determine their own syphilis antenatal screening policies.
