Abstract

Human enterovirus (EV) 71 belongs to the family Picornaviridae, genus Enterovirus, which includes polioviruses, echoviruses, coxsackieviruses A and B and EV types 68-70 [1]. EV71 can be classified into three genotypes, A, B and C, based on phylogenetic tree analysis using the nucleotide sequence of virus capsid protein (VP) 1 [2]. EV71, as the main pathogen associated with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) or herpangina associated neurological and cardiac complications, may lead to outbreaks of HFMD, which is associated with high mortality rates in children.
