Abstract

Learner's conceptions about a theme, under the light of the cognitive learning process, influence the student's knowledge building process. Therefore, the awareness and reflection upon those learner's conceptions are important points to the orientation of teaching-learning processes. Thus, based on this assumption, this study aims to present an analysis regarding the conceptions of the students about Immunology and the human immune system (SIH) and its relations to the teaching and learning of this theme in the context of a nursing technical course. For this purpose, we developed a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The data were collected through diagnostic activities, interviews, observations and audio recordings. The data analysis followed a hermeneutic interpretive method basis in line with the qualitative approach. It was verified the allocation of army actions to the immune system, such as attack and defense, aiming to protect the organism against the invasion of pathogens and/or foreign bodies. It was identified the belief that microorganisms are enemies and must be defeated by lymphocytes, antibodies and phagocytes. The presence of the war metaphor, in students' oral and written answers, was related to the understanding of the immunological phenomena exclusively connected with the maintenance of health through the elimination of foreign bodies from the system. It was verified the little knowledge of the immune system's physiology in the dynamic of the organism interactions with itself and also with the environment. Only one of the 71 students, who participated in the research, mentioned, indirectly, the relationship between immune system and the homeostasis concept, in other words, as a system acting to maintain the organism's structure (maintenance of organization) by a dynamic metabolic balance. Based on the results of the study, we suggest the need to improve the teaching of Immunology following a biological, systemic, homeostatic and non-metaphorical approach. We legitimate this indication due to the importance of this global knowledge to the understanding of health and the relations established with the body and the environment, in addition to a global understanding of the organism and the set of internal and external interactions that operate in maintaining life. Besides, we highlight the importance of decision making suited to keep health as well as physical, social and mental well-being. Finally, we suggest that this finding indicates the need of implementation of a teaching which considers the perceptions of learners on Immunology and the influence of those in the process of learning the subject.
