Abstract

Eleven years' research in subject description of fiction at the Department of Library and Information Science and Book Studies at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana is reviewed. This research was conducted by the author and her students. There were two basic motives for this series of studies. Firstly, subject description of fiction is rather neglected in the Slovenian union catalogue. Results show that for about two thirds of records for works of fiction subject description only consists in classification numbers. From users' point of view this is insufficient for retrieval. Secondly, the intention was to prepare guidelines, which could lead to a more consistent and uniform description of fiction in the Slovenian catalogue. Published and unpublished sources of data from libraries, publishers, literary critiques and people who read for pleasure were analysed. These four user groups describe fiction with classification numbers, subject headings or tags, and by writing texts of different length. The four user groups include four attributes in their description: 1) the story is described with events, circumstances, place and time in which the story evolves, literary characters, their profession and role in the story; 2) the author; 3) reading experience, and 4) evaluation. These are also the proposed guidelines. It is hoped that the guidelines would help the cataloguer to perform subject description of fiction with less effort and more consistently. This would result in a richer subject description and enable better retrieval from the catalogues and other databases.
