Abstract

In the present investigation, vortex formation during the transfer of liquid steel from the ladle to the tundish is studied using a physical model of the ladle used at ArcelorMittal Monlevade (1:3 scale). In this model, water is used to simulate liquid steel and silicon oil to simulate slag. A DOE (Design Of Experiments) is implemented and the effects of some factors and levels on vortex formation are analyzed. Based on the results of the present investigation, some observations can be described. By comparing the simulation results of water with or without silicon oil, a significant difference is found for the critical height (12 mm and 3 mm). It is an important observation to highlight due to the fact that simulations using only water and simulations using water and supernatant oil are not comparable. Besides that, the results show significant effects from the water flow rate and the presence of anti-vortex device, considering the use of silicon oil.
