Abstract

Describing the fixed aratean constellations as real creatures, the poet finally outclasses his model through an increasingly emphasized mimetism whose main outcome is a novel and authentic «dionysiac» astronomy: appropriate both to his own stylistic devices (e.g. paradox) and to the underpinning themes of his work, namely the relationship between original and copy. Sale, W.: «The Popularity of Aratus», The Classical Journal, 61 (1966), p. 160: «The polymath Eratosthenes, given the sobriquet 'Beta' by unkind contemporaries to underline his status in their eyes as someone second best at everything, included among his manifold activities the production of an ancilla to Aratus». Phaenomena, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1997, pp. 10-12, il quale, come Lewis, A.
