Abstract

For years now, the World Health Organization (WHO) has called for improved primary health care to solve patient needs and for an increase in more qualified health care practitioners to deliver this care (Lawn, et al, 2008).[...]in the US, part of the solution is to increase the number of highly qualified Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) to meet the complex primary health care needs of diverse populations.Engaging key partners beyond nursing such as Ministries of Health and Education as well as political leaders to advocate for this valuable profession can parallel the success that the Future of Nursing report effected in the U.S. The Pan American Health Organization has begun this work by its 2013 declaration and by bringing together nurses and others from across the continent to solve the problems of primary care for LAC (PAHO, 2013).
