GENERAL OUTLOOK on RADIO FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION (RFID) TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS in TOURISM INDUSTRY

Abstract

The aim of this study; beyond the technical aspects of RFID technology, to investigate what kind of areas the potential RFID applications take place in the tourism industry, in this direction, suggestions will be made to the researchers and practitioners to be carried out in the tourism industry in the future. This subject have been chosen due to the fact that in spite of various positive effects on businesses RFID technologies are applied by a limited number of businesses in the tourism industry and that some owners / managers are lack of information on RFID technologies. In the study, it has been determined that RFID applications are mainly implemented in hotel businesses by tracking textile products, providing convenience with RFID wristbands in various services such as room service, tracking materials used in housekeeping departments, ensuring guest safety. In other businesses, RFID application areas are relatively limited.

Çalışmanın amacı RFID teknolojilerindeki teknik konuların ötesinde, potansiyel RFID uygulamalarının turizm endüstrisinde ne tür alanlarda gerçekleştiğini araştırmak, bu doğrultuda gelecekte turizm endüstrisi özelinde yürütülecek araştırmalara ve uygulayıcılara çeşitli önerilerde bulunmaktır. İşletmeler üzerindeki çeşitli olumlu etkilerine karşın RFID teknolojilerinin turizm endüstrisinde sınırlı sayıda işletme tarafından uygulanması ve bazı işletme sahip/yöneticilerinin RFID teknolojilerine yönelik bilgi eksikliği olduğunun gözlenmesi, turizm endüstrisi özelinde sınırlı çalışmaların yer alması nedeniyle bu konu tercih edilmiştir. Çalışmada RFID uygulamalarının ağırlıklı olarak otel işletmelerinde tekstil ürünlerinin takibi, RFID tabanlı akıllı bileklikler ile oda servisi gibi çeşitli hizmetlerde misafirlere kolaylık sağlanması, kat hizmetlerinde kullanılan malzeme takibi ve misafir odalarının güvenliğinin sağlanmasında kullanıldığı belirlenmiştir. Diğer işletmelerde ise RFID uygulama alanlarının nispeten daha sınırlı olduğu saptanmıştır.
