Abstract

To counteract this problem, regular physical activity is recommended as it provides numerous health benefits, such as reductions in hypertension, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breast cancer, and stroke [5]. The school environment plays an important role in the promotion of physical activity, thanks to physical education and the organization of after school activities that promote the practice of sports, games, and other physical activities [7,11,14]. [...]parents can positively influence their offspring and act as role models, by providing emotional support, economic resources (covering expenses), and by providing transportation with their car [7,12]. Furthermore, qualitative studies have been used to study parents’ perceptions of physical activity and to identify strategies to incorporate into the prevention of childhood diseases [22]; to explore the links between parents´ and children’s perspectives on culture and healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as physical activity [10,22]; and to examine social neighborhood environments and children’s mobility [16], and the process for increasing physical activity among elementary-aged children [23].
