Abstract

According to the World Health Organization, there are 1.1. billion smokers worldwide [2]. [...]tobacco control policies in many countries have been strengthened and there is growing evidence that these policies are effective in reducing tobacco use [6,7,8]. Since women believe that smoking can help them to control weight, they may be unresponsive to increases in cigarette prices and are more likely to initiate smoking or continue to smoke than men when they experience a weight gain [28]. [...]to the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated gender differences in the impact of taxation and taxation structure on cigarette consumption. [...]more research is needed to better understand gender differences in tobacco control policy effectiveness from a broader context, focusing on taxation.
