Abstract

Introduction Glaucoma is clinically defined as progressive damage to the optic nerve and visual field (VF) loss principally associated with a loss of retinal ganglion cells and is widely reported as a leading cause of irreversible visual impairment and blindness [1,2]. In particular, integral components of eye–hand coordination task performance include projection of the VF onto the retina, sensory transmission of information to the visual cortex, cognitive planning and motor programming, activation of arm muscles to initiate a particular action, focus of attention, and visual feedback [24]. [28] analyzed the reach-to-grasp behavior of patients with glaucoma compared to normal-sighted control subjects and observed delays in average movement onset (mean delay 100 ms; p < 0.0001) and overall movement time (mean 140 ms; p < 0.05) in glaucoma patients. [...]impairment was correlated with both increasing VF defect severity and impaired stereoacuity. [...]testing the impact of age-related eye degeneration on functions of everyday life is important for preventing disability and reducing the risk of social isolation.
